One
of the most exciting new trends is known alternately as
Descriptive Video or Descriptive Audio. A very
simple definition is that DV is the closed-captioning equivalent
for the visually impaired. It consists of an audio track that
contains all the elements of the show plus, in between the lines
of dialogue, a narration of the visual elements that appear on
the screen. This audio track is then typically broadcast on the
SAP channel. In effect, television for the blind.
However, the process of Descriptive Video
is extremely time-consuming, and the talent required to created
good described versions is scarce. Up until now, this translated
into costs so high for DV that it made it prohibitive for the
networks and producers to consider. But new technologies and government
influence have combined to make DV a reality in North America.
Galaviz & Hauber Productions supplies Descriptive Video to Canada's
Global Television Network, the first private network in the
world to have scheduled DV as part of their regular programming.
In this nascent market, we have also created described versions
for ChumCity and CTV, two other Canadian networks.
